Five Lighting Mistakes That Make a Room Feel Smaller

When a client says a room feels cramped, the floor plan is rarely the problem. The light is.

Here are the five mistakes we see in nearly every consultation — and how to fix them without a single tradesman invoice.

1. One bright overhead light, nothing else

A single ceiling fixture flattens the room. Add at least two more layers — a floor lamp in a corner, a low pendant over a side table.

2. Cool white everywhere

4000K reads like an office. Drop to 2700K–3000K in living rooms and bedrooms. The difference is immediate.

3. Curtains hung at window height

Mount rods 15cm above the frame and let curtains kiss the floor. Ceilings instantly feel taller.

4. Recessed lights too close to the wall

They create dark scallops. Pull them out to 60cm minimum or wash the wall deliberately with a wall-grazer.

5. No bounce surfaces

A small room without reflective material absorbs light. One large mirror, one polished brass object — that's usually enough.
